What new role does the media system play in global digital change? What effects does it have on state institutions in the focus of interethnic economic, humanitarian and socio-cultural interaction? What is the novelty of media quality criteria in a networked society? These topics were the focus of attention of the participants of the international conference “Media Components of The Digital Economy”, which took place on 9 November in the Central House of Journalists in Moscow. The event was organized by the Academy of Media Industries with the support of the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communication and was attended by leading media experts and journalists from eight countries.
Sergey Davydov, Rector of the Media Industry Academy, said at the opening of the plenary session of the conference that the digital economy is “less a state than a direction and a set of different processes covering different aspects of modern society. According to him, mediatization raises the issue of adopting innovations at different levels – from large state and commercial structures, industrial infrastructures to the individual level.
The head of the Academy of Media Industry announced that the Higher School of Economics and RAEC have published studies on the discourse of the digital economy in the Russian media, the main conclusion of which is the lack of analytical materials published by the media. For the effective development of the digital economy, Davydov said, “it is necessary to understand the challenges and opportunities as well as the threats, in particular the problems of personal and collective information security in the “age of large amounts of data”.

Aleksey Tsekhovoy (Republic of Kazakhstan), Director General of the International Academy for Informatization, considered digitization and project management as tools to improve the competitiveness of the state. Elena Vartanova, Dean of the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow State University Lomonosov, stressed the active role of the media in the development of the digital economy and noted that the media industry is largely based on the achievements of digital technologies, already at the stage of creating a journalistic product. In her report “The Russian Media System: Drivers and Barriers to Digital Transformation”, Elena Vartanova stressed the correctness of the conference title, as the media industry “has become an industry that makes a significant contribution to the GDP of many countries”.

Mike Friedrichsen, founding president of the Berlin University of Digital Sciences, pointed out that up to 70% of German publishers did not sell digital products last year. Friedrichsen, who described digitisation as a “new DNA code for very different media”, sees this transformation as a threat not only to the well-known media system but also to the profession of journalist, with the lack of willingness to pay for journalistic online products posing a growing problem.
The conference was continued with three round tables: “The media industry in the stage of digital transformation. State institutions in the focus of interethnic economic, humanitarian and socio-cultural interaction”; “Media research in the context of digitalization. Criteria for the quality of media production in the network society, the design of new formats and methods of interaction with the audience”; “Digital competence as a factor in the development of the media sector”. Representatives from Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, the Republic of Belarus and Estonia spoke about the different framework conditions.
The delegates agreed that under the conditions of the digitalization of the economy, a constant exchange of scientific and practical experiences in the journalistic and scientific environment of representatives of Russia and abroad plays an important role in identifying perspectives for the improvement of media practice and media education. “In this context, the media, which have a great basis for interaction with society and the national economy, are able to give society the necessary recommendations to exploit the potential of innovative technologies for the benefit of humanity,” emphasized the Forum participants.
